Weishu Acupoint
Location Method
The Weishu acupoint is located on the back, below the spinous process of the 12th thoracic vertebra (T12), approximately two finger-widths lateral to the midline of the spine.
How to Find It (Simplified)
The Weishu point is the primary point on the back for treating stomach issues. Here’s a practical way to locate it:
-
Find the Bottom of the Rib Cage: Run your hands down the sides of your body to find the bottom edge of your rib cage.
-
Trace to the Spine: Follow this line horizontally towards your spine. The vertebra at this level is the 12th thoracic vertebra (T12).
-
Locate the Point: Find the bony bump (the spinous process) of this T12 vertebra. The Weishu point is located in the depression just below this bump, about 1.5 to 2 finger-widths (1.5 cun) to the side of the spine, on the thick paraspinal muscles. There is one point on each side of the spine.
Significance and Functions
Weishu (胃俞) translates to “Stomach Shu.” In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Shu points on the back are diagnostic and therapeutic points that directly influence their corresponding internal organ. Therefore, Weishu (BL21) is a major point for regulating all functions of the Stomach.
Its primary functions include:
-
Harmonizing the Stomach and Descending Rebellious Qi (和胃降逆): This is its main function. It helps to ensure that Stomach Qi moves downwards correctly, making it a key point for treating nausea, vomiting, belching, hiccups, and acid reflux.
-
Regulating the Middle Jiao and Relieving Pain (理中止痛): It addresses issues in the digestive center of the body (the Spleen and Stomach). It is highly effective for relieving stomach aches, epigastric pain, abdominal bloating, and indigestion.
-
Resolving Dampness and Strengthening the Spleen (化湿健脾): The Stomach and Spleen are easily affected by “dampness,” which can lead to a feeling of heaviness, poor appetite, and loose stools. Weishu helps to clear this dampness and support the digestive system.
