Zhongwan Acupoint
Location Method
The Zhongwan acupoint is located on the upper abdomen, along the anterior midline of the body, 4 cun above the center of the navel.
How to Find It (Simplified)
This is one of the most important points for digestive health. Here’s the easiest way to locate it:
-
Lie on your back and relax your abdomen.
-
Identify two landmarks: the center of your navel (belly button) and the very bottom tip of your breastbone (the sternum).
-
The Zhongwan point is located exactly halfway between these two points, on the midline of your body.
(Note: A “cun” is a traditional Chinese unit of measurement relative to a person’s body. The distance from the navel to the bottom of the breastbone is 8 cun, so 4 cun is precisely half of that distance.)
Significance and Functions
Zhongwan (中脘) translates to “Middle Cavity” or “Middle Epigastrium,” reflecting its central location in the digestive area. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is the Front-Mu (Alarm) point of the Stomach, meaning the Qi of the Stomach organ gathers here. It is also an influential point for all the Fu (hollow) organs.
It is a primary point for treating almost any digestive system disorder. Its main functions include:
-
Harmonizing the Stomach and Regulating Qi: It is the go-to point for indigestion, stomach pain, bloating, fullness, and abdominal distention.
-
Descending Rebellious Qi: It helps redirect the flow of energy downward, making it highly effective for treating nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, belching, and hiccups.
-
Strengthening the Spleen and Tonifying Deficiency: It strengthens the entire digestive system, helping to improve appetite, reduce fatigue caused by poor digestion, and treat chronic digestive weakness.
