Gallbladder Fire Blazing

Gallbladder Fire Blazing refers to a syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) caused by an excess of yang energy, or “fire,” in the Gallbladder meridian.

Common symptoms include:

  • Dizziness

  • Red face

  • Red, swollen eyes

  • Irritability and a short temper[1][2][3]

  • Dry mouth and throat[1][3]

  • A bitter taste in the mouth[1][2][3][4][5][6]

  • Bad breath

  • Difficulty falling asleep or poor sleep quality[1]

  • Pain in the back

  • A sensation of stuffy heat in the body

Treatment and Conditioning

In clinical practice, Gallbladder Fire can be managed through herbal medicine and dietary adjustments. The goal of treatment is to clear heat from the Gallbladder and regulate its function.[1]

Herbal Medicine:

  • Longdan Xiegan Wan (龙胆泻肝丸): This is a classic and widely used formula for clearing fire from the Liver and Gallbladder.[4][7][8] It is effective for symptoms like headache, red eyes, bitter taste in the mouth, and irritability.[4][5]

  • Gandan Shuangqing Granules (肝胆双清颗粒): This formula also works to clear heat from both the Liver and Gallbladder.

  • Xiaoyan Lidan Pian (消炎利胆片): This is an anti-inflammatory and choleretic (bile-promoting) tablet that has shown good results in treating Gallbladder Fire.

Dietary Therapy:
A light and cooling diet is recommended as an auxiliary treatment.[9]

  • Foods to Include: Incorporating dark leafy greens, green tea, beets, broccoli, and sprouts can support Liver and Gallbladder health.[9][10] Bitter foods are thought to help clear heat.[11]

  • Foods to Avoid: It is important to limit or avoid greasy, fried, and spicy foods, as well as alcohol, which can worsen the condition by creating more “dampness” and “heat”.[2][9][12]
