Damp-Heat Trapping the Spleen
Characteristic Manifestations
-
A feeling of fullness and distention in the epigastrium and abdomen.

Heaviness and fatigue in the limbs.
-
Scanty and yellow urine.
-
Loose, sticky stools with a feeling of incomplete evacuation.

Poor appetite and aversion to food.

Nausea and vomiting.
-
Alternatively, there may be yellowing of the face, eyes, and skin, with a bright, orange-like hue, and itchy skin.

Or, there may be a fluctuating fever where sweating does not bring relief from the heat.

The tongue is red with a yellow, greasy coating, and the pulse is soggy and rapid.
Treatment and Conditioning
Principle:
Clear heat and transform dampness. A representative formula is Huo Po Xia Ling Tang (藿朴夏苓汤).

Individual Herbs and Their Actions:

Ji Nei Jin (Chicken Gizzard Lining): Strengthens the spleen and fortifies the stomach.

Qian Shi (Euryale Seed), Shan Yao (Chinese Yam): Benefit the kidneys and expel dampness.

Fu Ling (Poria): Treats insomnia due to spleen deficiency.

Sha Ren (Cardamom): Warms the spleen and dispels dampness.

Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean), Yi Yi Ren (Coix Seed): Promote urination and leach out dampness.

Fu Pen Zi (Raspberry): Nourishes the liver and improves vision.

Ge Gen (Kudzu Root): Releases the muscle layer and reduces fever, generates fluids, vents rashes, raises yang, and stops diarrhea. It has a relieving effect on headache, lower back and back pain, thirst, eczema, and neck pain.

Ma Chi Xian (Purslane): Addresses fullness in the chest and abdomen, and scanty, difficult urination.

Ju Ju (Chicory): Used for stomach pain with poor appetite, edema, and scanty urine caused by dampness.

Gan Cao (Licorice Root): For heart qi deficiency with palpitations, and spleen and stomach qi deficiency with fatigue and weakness.
